AYH invites Jess Glenny - Ashtanga Weekend Retreat

We are very excited to be welcoming back Jess Glenny to co-teach a weekend retreat with Andy on the Sussex Coast - home to AYH. Jess is a very special and unique Yoga teacher with a broad and deep field of experience and knowledge in embodied movement.

Jess has lived a life full of movement and dance, and ballet in particular has played and continues to play a profound role in her life. She did her first Yoga classes in the 1980’s, but it was not until she found Ashtanga Yoga in 2001 that she really fell in love with yoga practice. Where previously she had found Yoga to be a static pursuit, in Ashtanga Vinyasa she was captivated by the choreographies of movement on the breath, the intensity of the physical challenge, the repetition and return to the same thing again and again but always experienced in different ways.

Jess has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga since 2003, the same year she began working as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist. For her, teaching, facilitating and holding therapeutic space has become a field of practice. She views holding space for other people’s embodied enquiry as a natural outgrowth of her own movement exploration. Her teaching embodies the depth and qualities that only come from a lifetime’s experience of embodied movement practice, study and sharing.

Her relationship with Ashtanga Yoga has developed and shifted over the years, informed by experience and understanding of her own body, and in particular of being hypermobile.

Jess says:

My body moving is a kind of fluid compass for me.
Through it I emerge authentic direction and feel into what I need now. As I get older, the urgency to re-pattern, recalibrate and become better versions of myself has ebbed away. Practice is more about relaxing a little more into my own humanity – being, enjoying, exploring, just because I can.

Jess is a writer, with a Phd in English. She is a published author, whose books include Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat: A Guide to Hypermobility-Aware Yoga Teaching and Practice, The Yoga Teacher Mentor: A Reflective Guide to Holding Spaces, Maintaining Boundaries, and Creating Inclusive Classes, and Ravelled Up: A journey Into Embodiment. She is Autistic and welcomes neurodivergent students into her practice spaces.

What Students say about Jess:

One of the big things for me is that Jess is so absolutely authentic in her practice and it is an inspiration to know that that integrity underpins all her classes.
Belinda

Jess is a very gifted teacher and creates a space where one is entirely free from judgement and the soft energy of acceptance is ever present. She encourages deep listening in a very profound way because she is so finely tuned in to the present moment. A class can therefore be full of quiet, gentle surprises and slow awakenings.
Anne-Marie D

Jess’s teaching gently reveals the magic of yoga.
Yana

Jess is in a totally different league from other teachers. Her attention to detail is bar none. She is a fabulous teacher and I really enjoy her classes.
